Birthday Pool Party by underwatertoons Birthday Pool Party by underwatertoons
Happy 20th birthday, :iconshifty-eyes-sonic:! Last year, I gave him a gift drawing of Lisa Simpson's underwater birthday party - and this year, I've added some more of his favorite toon girls to the mix. (Jessica, Amy, Angelica, and Susie were all his suggestions, but I threw in Wendy and Bebe myself - I can't help being on this "South Park" kick of mine!) Hope it's to his liking!

I like how the South Park girls have no black outlines like the other cartoon girls. :)

Wow. I just noticed that you have a lot of positive feedback on Amy here! Granted, the other girls are awesome here, too, but I think it's clear who's the fan favorite...maybe.

Also, just a thought, but on the subject of videogame girls, I'd love to see Shantae in some of your work sometime!

Awww.....Wooohoooouuuw.

I seen all your underwater-pictures right now. This...is....UNBELIEVABLE....AND COOL.....AND CUTE.

This is really an excellent idea. A lot of things happens underwater. And this pictures are the reasons.

I comment this picture, because The Simpson- and South Park-Girls (specially Wendy) are compleetly cute. The another pictures are cool, too, no question. But this is my favorite.

Kepp going, "underwatertoons". You have surely more ideas for underwater-pictures. I hope, you make it better than good. Even more.

Oh, right: Wendy is here especially cute underwater.

It's actualy quite rare to see you draw sonic chars, which is odd seeing as there's an armada of fan-chars here .

Very nice collaboration, i'm a sucker for crossovers X3

You do an epic amy rose! How come you don't draw sonic characters more often?
Everyone knows our favorite blue hedgehog has a phobia of water ;)

Man, you have some imagination to do submarine scenes.

When doing underwater stuff I have two problems.

1. Hair: In Ariel's case, it's terribly difficult to get it right. She has more hair in her head than a polar bear in his whole body. I feel so sorry for the poor animator that had to do the scene of "part of your world", apparently he worked like a maniac only to get the hair right.

2. The bubbles: it's not as easy as it seems not to repeat the form and size of one bubble constantly. Not only that you master the art of drawing bubbles, but you know enough fluid physics to draw them with different amounts of pressure and speed. You can portrait anything from a splash in the pool from little bubbles escaping from the nose, and that is something very rare to be found.

I could recommend a book that may help you a little bit extra with water. Is called "Elemental Magic" and it's about "physics" in animation (water, fire, smoke...)
You can check it here, in Google books:

I don't think Glen Keane had a problem putting in the extra hours drawing Ariel, since he even asked to be her supervising animator.

Wow, I did not know it was him. Oh well, Glenn is not known a genius in his own specialty for nothing. But every time I see the hair in that scene a have goosebumps just to the thought of having to do that work all by myself.

Fortunately, Keane had some very good reference - you've probably heard that Sherri Stoner worked at Disney at the time they were making The Little Mermaid, and they videotaped her swimming underwater in a big tank to study how her hair moved. It paid off, too, 'cause I don't think I've ever seen more realistic underwater hair effects in animation than I did in that movie. It's so hard to get it right that most other cartoons don't even try.

I didn't knew that either. (is this explained in the special edition making off?) But this explains many things to me (and makes me feel a little better).

I thought that they had done her hair the same way they did Eris from Simbad (legend of the seven seas) her flow is based on the physics of smoke and in the movement of some snakes. I bet that she cost a couple of Advils to her animators in more than once occasion. In fact, when I see that character, I never focus on her acting, but on her smoky appearance and specially on her hair.

1. Agreed - and this is from someone who (off of dA, of course) draws Amy underwater A LOT.

2. Even though the show's a bit much for me (and I'm turning 17 soon, FCOL), I've got to agree. From what I've seen, South Park has no shading to speak of, so this IS an interesting sight.

1. You should upload a couple pics when you get the chance - as you can see, you'd probably get instant recognition!

2. Yup, JB's full of surprises these days.
